Layer up
Remember, there is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing. So when temps drop, the art of layering becomes the rule of the thumb. This tried-and-tested system is the best way to enjoy the outdoors regardless of the weather.
Base layer: merino wool
The first layer is the most important, because it is worn closest to the skin. Since comfort is key, this will make all the difference between a fun outdoor adventure or a miserable one. With this in mind, be sure that the base layer it’s not too tight around the neck (you can always cover it with a scarf), and avoid cotton because it can get soaked quickly and it takes a long time to dry. A base layer with brushed interior will be warmer, but a base layer with a smooth finish will dry faster and be more versatile.
Mid layer: fleece sweater
The second layer brings warmth, but may not be relevant unless Mother Nature foresees big temperature swings. You really need to think about how easy it is for kids to put it on and take off. For example, for the youngest, find a garment with a zipper, and for the oldest, a half-zipper to encourage independence.
Outer layerlayer: mid-season coat and/or snowsuit
The third layer provides protection from the elements: wind, rain and surprise snow! There are two types of mid-season jackets to choose from: water-resistant and waterproof. Both are available from Decathlon, for boys and girls.
