Bowness Park

One of Calgary's most popular parks, this is a great cross-country skiing destination for the whole family. Follow the lovely trail along the Bow River and enjoy this beautiful spot that's conveniently located very close to downtown. Ski rentals are available in the park and there is parking as well. This location is also ideal for ice skating, so aside from beautiful views it offers a variety of winter activities for everyone to enjoy!

Maple Ridge Golf Course

This sprawling golf course close to downtown Calgary is an excellent option for cross-country skiers of all levels. With groomed trails at varying levels of difficulty, you will definitely find something to keep you moving. Remember to dress in layers as you head out across this beautiful expanse of snow and get ready to get a great workout in.

Canmore Nordic Centre

The cross-country ski competition of the 1988 Winter Olympic Games was held in this provincial park. It is still a favourite training location for world-class athletes, but recreational skiers can also enjoy the over 65 km of groomed, machine-made and nature trails on offer. Just over an hour drive from downtown Calgary, this is definitely worth a day trip and may just become one of your favourite spots for amazing views and an excellent cross-country workout.

Mount Shark

This fairly challenging network of interconnected ski loops may be best suited to intermediate or advanced cross-country skiers. The groomed ski trails have some challenging hills and winding turns that may be difficult for beginner skiers, but they also offer stunning mountain views that will definitely take your breath away. If you're up to the challenge, Mount Shark will guarantee an excellent day of skiing.

Lake Louise

This famous destination is approximately two hours from downtown Calgary, but it is well worth the trip for the spectacular views alone. Near Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, you'll find over 15 groomed cross-country ski trails with a variety of loops to choose from including Moraine Lake Road Trail that is a 15.6km climb with gentle rolling hills. Or, you may want to try the Lake Louise loop, this one goes directly over the frozen lake and then heads into the woods for some more beautiful trails.

Wherever you decide to take your cross-country skiing adventures this winter, be sure to have the right gear before you head out. A good base layer is key because it wicks away the sweat as you move. Cross-country skiing is an excellent workout that will definitely get your heart pumping, so it is important to conserve your body heat as you go by ensuring you stay warm and dry.
