Choosing a mountain bike

XC, All Mountain or DH? Choosing the right MTB depends on your ride duration and terrain. Follow our guide to find the perfect bike for your adventures.

XC, All Mountain, or Downhill? With so many disciplines, finding the right bike can be tricky. To make the best choice, focus on two key factors: the duration of your rides and the type of terrain you want to conquer. Here is how to decide.

What are the benefits of mountain biking?

Engaging in any physical activity brings numerous health benefits. Cycling, as one of the most popular disciplines, offers the added advantage of being an outdoor activity that helps maintain physical fitness. Regular cycling strengthens your cardiovascular system and enhances your breathing capacity.

Mountain biking also helps to boost blood circulation, especially in your legs. By engaging all the muscles in your body, it is also a great way to build muscle strength. In terms of well-being, mountain biking has benefits for your mental health as it helps reduce stress and anxiety while you enjoy a lovely sunny day and focus on your performance.

Many people today choose to cycle to work instead of using public transport. Not only does this help combat pollution, but it also promotes a more eco-conscious lifestyle aimed at protecting the environment. If you are looking to buy a bike for your daily commutes, a mountain bike could be the ideal solution as it can be used on all types of terrain.

What type of mountain biking?

First of all, define the type of mountain biking discipline you want to pursue. Depending on your motivation and preferences, your choice of bike will vary. Key features like the frame, suspension, wheels and brakes differ significantly based on the type of riding you intend to do. So whether it's trail riding, cross country, or all-mountain... it's up to you!

  • Trail mountain biking

Do you want to ride your mountain bike for sport or leisure? At your own pace, you can enjoy exercising in the great outdoors, exploring new trails and terrains. Often done in groups, it's above all a shared sporting experience.

  • Cross Country MTB

Are you looking for speed and performance? Cross Country (or XC) Mountain Biking is perfect for you! Push your limits: climb faster and aim for maximum efficiency on descents. Perhaps you're even considering entering a competition soon?

  • All-Mountain MTB

Do you enjoy riding on rough terrain? Are mountain slopes your favourite playground? Then go for All Mountain Biking, also known as AM MTB. Embark on adventures to conquer uncharted trails, climb the highest peaks, and enjoy thrilling descents.

Technical elements: frame, suspension, wheel size, brakes...

ALUMINIUM OR CARBON FRAME?

Today, there are two main materials used for MTB frames: aluminium and carbon. Aluminium is a widely used material that offers a good balance between flexibility and durability. If you're looking for more rigidity, a carbon frame is a lightweight and high-performance option.

SUSPENSION: HARDTAIL OR FULL SUSPENSION?

When it comes to mountain biking, suspension is key! If this is your first mountain bike, you may be unfamiliar with these terms.

  • Hardtail mountain bike

    Hardtail mountain bike

Hardtail mountain bikes have a single suspension at the front of the bike.

Your bike is more rigid and lightweight, which means your energy is focused on efficient pedalling. Maintenance is also easier.

  • Full-suspension mountain bike

    Full-suspension mountain bike

Full-suspension mountain bikes have two suspensions: one at the front and one at the rear. With the additional rear shock absorber, you get better comfort and feel much less of the impact on the rear wheel. If you're riding on rough terrain, you'll appreciate the full suspension for its ability to maintain ground contact and improve traction.

WHEEL SIZE: 26", 27.5" OR 29"?

Here, measurements are in inches, not centimetres! The diameter of the wheels is an important factor when choosing your mountain bike. Today, four wheel sizes are available on the market:

  • 26" Wheels

This wheel size is no longer widely used today, except in children's bike models. It was very popular for its manoeuvrability and rigidity, but it is less comfortable compared to its competitors.

  • 27.5" Wheels

This size offers a good alternative between 26” and 29” wheels: it combines manoeuvrability and dynamism, making it enjoyable for all mountain bikers.

  • 29" Wheels

This is now the standard for mountain bike wheels. 29" wheels offer more speed and inertia on smoother trails, allowing for efficient performance.

V-BRAKES, MECHANICAL DISC BRAKES OR HYDRAULIC DISC BRAKES?

  • Rim brakes or V-brakes

    Rim brakes or V-brakes

Effective and powerful in dry conditions, they are less efficient in the rain or mud. Bonus: They are easy to maintain.

  • Mechanical disc brakes

    Mechanical disc brakes

With more progressive and powerful braking, they can be used in all weather conditions. However, be cautious about cable adjustments.

  • Hydraulic disc brakes

    Hydraulic disc brakes

Precise, powerful and progressive. They provide a high-performance and responsive riding experience. Keep in mind that maintenance requirements are higher for this type of brake.

Choosing an electric mountain bike

The range of mountain bikes now includes electric mountain bikes (e-MTBs), also known as pedal-assist mountain bikes. They are perfect if you’re seeking extended enjoyment and adventure without exhausting yourself. An e-MTB is also suitable for those who want to get (back) into mountain biking: Beginners who are still building their endurance, former riders looking to overcome physical limitations, and experienced riders eager to maximize their enjoyment. Electric mountain bikes are accessible to everyone!

Advice from our Rockrider team

No mountain biking without a helmet” is Rockrider's motto. Too many accidents happen, and we don't want that to continue. So, here’s an important reminder: never forget your helmet on any mountain bike ride. Good mountain biking gear will ensure a successful and enjoyable adventure!

One simple rule: Choose a mountain bike that suits you, fits your budget, and matches your riding style. That's how you'll get the most enjoyment from your mountain bike.
