How to choose a men's swimsuit?

Swimming briefs, boxers, jammer... What are the differences? How to choose the right shape for your swimwear. What are the criteria? We explain all you need to know.

Your men's swimwear is your most basic equipment! Therefore, choosing the right swimwear is a priority. You will make your choice according to the features you are looking for: chlorine resistance, support, cut, etc. But also according to your preferred shape and style. We will explain everything.

What are the different shapes of men's swimwear?

Swimming briefs : Do we really need to introduce them? Swimming briefs are the model that provides the least coverage and they are worn by all types of swimmers.

Swimming trunks: Swimming trunks provide slightly more coverage on the hips than swimming briefs.

Swimming boxers (short or long): The bottom of swimming boxers is technical, stylish and comfortable. They are longer than swimming briefs, but shorter than a jammer. There are two versions of boxers: standard boxers and long boxers.

Swimming shorts: This is the ideal shape if you do not like tight-fitting swimwear. Swimming shorts are comfortable in the water and on the pool side. Swimming shorts are also available in short and long versions. The choice is yours!

💡 Information to keep in mind: swimming shorts are prohibited in many public swimming pools for hygiene-related reasons. Remember to check before going to the pool to avoid being caught out!

Jammer : A jammer is tight-fitting and long (above the knee).

Choosing a type of men's swimwear. Focus on the features.

The three main features of your swimwear are:

Chlorine resistance: If you go swimming on a regular basis, you need swimwear with good chlorine resistance. Only logical, you may say... But it is important to bear this in mind, so that you take this feature into consideration when buying your swimwear. It is important to choose swimwear with good chlorine resistance, because it will last for longer over time. As a general rule, the higher you go up the range, the better the chlorine resistance of the swimwear. Our entry-level swimwear has a lifetime of between 90 h and 250 h. Our swimwear designed for regular swimming and high performance remains chlorine-resistant for between 130 h and 300 h.

Support: Support is an important factor of your criteria. Swimming in swimwear that offers poor support and does not remain stable in the water can be quite unpleasant. How do our design teams guarantee the support provided by your future swimwear? By conducting numerous tests in the lab and under real-life conditions. The support criterion is calculated mainly according to the bottom part of your swimwear, which can be tightened using a draw string, so that the swimwear fits your body shape.

The coverage of the swimwear: This criterion is mainly subjective. It is up to you to find the type of swimwear in which you feel most at ease.

The shape of your swimwear is important. If you are a frequent swimmer, you probably already know which is your favourite shape. So, if you are used to wearing swimming boxers, switching to briefs or a jammer may not be easy. The most important thing is that you feel at ease in your swimwear!

Choose your swimwear on the basis of how often you swim

Choosing the right swimwear depends on whether you are an occasional or regular swimmer.

Occasional: Irrespective of your level, if you are not a regular swimmer and you do not have any particular progress targets, freedom of movement is your top priority criterion. The goal: to make sure that you feel at ease when exercising in water.

Regular: Whether you are practising for a competition or you swim for pleasure and well-being, we can say that you are a regular swimmer if you swim in chlorinated or salt water more than once a week. In this case, you should choose swimwear with high chlorine resistance.

Briefs, short or long boxers... How to choose the right shape of men's swimwear for swimming in pools or open water.

Is there any swimwear designed specifically for swimming in open water or pools? Not really. All types of swimwear designed for swimming pools can also be used for open-water swimming. However, neoprene jammers provide greater buoyancy for your legs when swimming in the sea, lakes or rivers.

If you swim for pleasure or your well-being, and you visit the pool to swim and to enjoy the benefits of water, without a regular training plan or progress targets, then you should choose swimming briefs, long or short boxers or swimming shorts.

If you have progress or performance targets and you have a specific training plan, possibly for competitions, then you should opt for briefs, trunks, short or long boxers or a jammer.

You can wear any type of swimwear in competitions, apart from swimming shorts. If you swim in a jammer, it must have specific technical characteristics, such as compression or water-repellency, and the technology must be homologated by World Aquatics in order to use it in competitions.

💡 This list is not set in stone for leisure of performance, and you are free to choose the type of swimwear you prefer. There is always a very subjective aspect to choosing your swimwear.

Style matters, but don't forget support and chlorine resistance. Choose the right cut for your goals and enjoy your swim!
